3 Best Kratom Strains for Headaches and Migraines

Kratom is harvested in various parts of Southeast Asia. It comes from evergreen trees known as Mitragyna Speciosa. For hundreds of years, it’s been used for relief of pain, relaxation, and as a stimulant. Surprisingly, kratom trees come from the same family as Rubiaceae, or coffee plants. It has similar effects as coffee, but it won’t give you the drowsiness or headaches that coffee can give if you take it correctly. There are typically three colored strains. White is used as a stimulant, red is for pain, and green is a mild to a moderate balance of both. Here are 3 kratom strains that can help ease the pain of a headache or migraine:

1) Red Hulu is grown in Indonesia near the Kapuas river. This unique strain has lots of alkaloids and is effectively potent because of the rich environment it grows in. You can expect Red Hulu to be a great pain reliever while giving you a bit of energy.

Recommended dosage: 3-5 grams for stimulating effects or 6-8 grams for strong effects.

2) Green Malay is a highly popular strain within the kratom community. It’s harvested in Malaysia and can provide you with a good balance of energy and pain relief. This is a great option for those who have a milder to moderate headache and need a pick-me-up to get things done.

Recommended dosage: 3-5 grams for mild effects or 6-8 grams for strong effects.

3) Red Borneo, as the name says, comes from the island of Borneo. It is an amazing strain for pain relief and relaxation. It’s a very potent strain, and so a little can go a long way. It’s calming and analgesic effects make this a great strain to take about an hour before you go to bed or in small doses throughout the day.

Recommended dosage: About 3 grams every 6 hours.

We recommend all first-time kratom users take about 1.5-2 grams first. You can then slowly increase until you reach the amount that is effective for you.

Ways to Consume Kratom

The most traditional and popular way to take kratom is in a tea form. This is the way it’s used by many of the natives in Southeast Asia, besides chewing the leaves. It easy to make, but it does take a little to prepare. Start by boiling some water. Then reduce it to a simmer. You don’t want to boil the kratom because it can get rid of all the precious alkaloids. Finally, you can add honey or your favorite sweetener to make the taste more bearable. You can now enjoy hot, herbal tea.

If you want to avoid the bitter taste kratom has, there are pre-measured capsules available. Another plus is that it isn’t messy like kratom powder can be. Kratom capsules dissolve much faster, and so the effects can be felt quickly. Most strains are available in capsule form and they are generally inexpensive.

Many vendors also sell liquid kratom tinctures. Kratom tinctures are highly concentrated with the alkaloids found in kratom leaves. This means that it will be very potent and effective. The dropper makes it easy to take. You can squeeze the dropper sublingually or directly on your tongue.

The “toss and wash” method is used by many who their kratom powder at hand but want to save time and feel the effects quicker. Just as it says, you “toss” your measured kratom powder in your mouth and wash it down with water or your favorite beverage. Beware, as you might make a face with this method. It is not the most pleasant way to consume kratom, but it works fantastic.

Just like most things in this world, too much of anything isn’t so good. The same could be said about kratom, with some people experiencing negative side effects. Some of these do include headaches, nausea, and sedation. However, these are easily avoidable if you follow some of these tips.

Stay Hydrated- Some people claim to get headaches from kratom. This is often due to dehydration. Dehydration, as we mentioned earlier in the article, can cause headaches. So, stay hydrated throughout the day and you more than likely will not experience this.

Do not take a much higher amount than you’re used to- This is quite a common mistake people make. When it comes to kratom, you always need to increase your dosage in slow amounts. Some kratom strains are much stronger than others. When you jump from a lower dose to a really high dose, you can often experience the side effects we mentioned, and it will ruin your experience.

Tea powder form instead of capsules and “toss and wash”- Since the “toss and wash” method and capsules often cause potent effects due to your body breaking it down being much faster, we recommend you stick to taking it as a tea. This allows you to take it at a much slower pace, so you won’t feel it all at once if your tolerance is low.

Try not to take it every day- There are some people that take kratom every day, as its effects and benefits are highly enjoyable to many. This causes people to take grow very tolerant of kratom. They end up taking very large doses, which then causes negative side effects. It’s best to take kratom occasionally so you won’t increase your tolerance too much.
